The Kampílan

According to Filipino history, the Kampilan is believed to be the sword that struck down the famous explorer, Ferdinand Magellan, at the hands of the legendary Chief, Lapu-lapu. Originally, dual pointed with a carved hilt, these swords of the Moros of Sulu and Mindanao are carried by warriors who are in the first line of defense. They are considered the national weapon of the Moros of Sulu & Mindanao.

The kampílan is a type of single-edged long sword, used in the Philippine islands of Mindanao, Visayas, and Luzon. It has a distinct profile, with the tapered blade being much broader and thinner at the point than at its base, sometimes with a protruding spikelet along the flat side of the tip and a bifurcated hilt which is believed to represent a mythical creature’s open mouth.

The Maguindanao and the Maranao of mainland Mindanao preferred this weapon as opposed to the Tausug of Sulu who favoured the barung. The Kapampangan name of the Kampilan was “Talibong” and the hilt on the Talibong represented the dragon Naga, however the creature represented varies between different ethnic groups. Its use by the Illocanos have also been seen in various ancient records.

A notable wielder of the kampílan was Datu Lapu-Lapu, the king of Mactan and his warriors who defeated the Spaniards and killed Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan at the Battle of Mactan on April 27, 1521. The mention of the kampílan in ancient Filipino epics originating from other non-Muslim areas such as the Hiligaynon Hinilawod and the Ilocano Biag ni Lam-Ang is possible evidence for the sword’s widespread usage throughout the archipelago during the ancient times.

The laminated steel blade of the kampílan is single-edged, and made from an Arabic pattern-welding process and is easily identified by its tapered profile, narrowest near the hilt and gently widening until its truncated point. The blade’s spikelet has led to the description of the kampílan in some documents as “dual-tipped” or “double-tipped”

The scabbard is usually made of cheap wood and is bound with simple rattan or fibre lashings. When the sword needs to be used immediately, the sword bearer will simply strike with the sheathed sword and the blade will cut through the lashings, thereby effecting a quick, tactical strike without the need to unsheathe the sword.

The hilt is quite long in order to counterbalance the weight and length of the blade and is made of hardwood. As with the blade, the design of the hilt’s profile is relatively consistent from blade to blade, combining to make the kampílan an effective combat weapon.

The Fire Axe is nearly finished! After re-importing it into Maya, the UV mapping issue came back to haunt me, so I will be re-adjusting it in Photoshop. Luckily, this time, both the model and the UV map were far simpler, so I should have the model in UDK by the end of today. While the low-poly model is only 318 tris, I might use a model with a few more subdivisions for the exposition.

“Aboriginal artists formerly devoted much of their energies to the creation and adornment of weapons, such as shields, boomerangs, spear throwers, and clubs. Many served equally in warfare and in hunting game such as kangaroos or emus. Shields, however, were used almost exclusively in combat, although some ceremonial forms served as dance accessories. Fighting shields occur in two basic types, each designed for a specific purpose. The first comprised relatively flat, broad shields used to protect the bearer from projectile weapons, such as spears, throwing clubs, and boomerangs thrown by the enemy. The second type was a narrower, more compact parrying shield, used to ward off blows from fighting clubs and other hand-held weapons during close combat. The designs of Aboriginal weapons are typically geometric, although figurative images appear on some examples. Some designs may have been purely decorative. However, many likely symbolized aspects of Dreaming (the beings, sites, and events of the primordial creation period) or marked the owner’s identity or group affiliation.”

Examples of piha-kaeta daggers from Sri Lanka are not difficult to come by, but excellent eighteenth century examples are relatively rare. This is a superb example. The hilt is of ivory finely carved and detailed with a liya-pata pattern. The end is encased in a broad rounding of silver that has been chased with typically Ceylonese scrolling foliage and fruit motifs. From this is emitted a rounded tang button. The hilt is further embellished with six applied silver scrolling leaf motif plaques.

The blade is straight with a single edge. It is inlaid on both sides with vegetal motifs in brass; is inset and overlaid with sheet silver that has been chased with swirling flower bud and foliage motifs; and encased in a thick silver section that has been chiselled with extravagant, leafy patterns and engraved with more foliate scrolls that has then been parcel gilded providing an elegant and fine contrast between the gold and silverwork.

The top of the blade is further decorated by chased silver sheet that has been let into the blade. The scabbard is of two halves of grooved, light wood, the upper part of which has been encased in thin, high-grade silver sheet that has been embellished with filigree and pearled silver wire borders.

This piha-kaeta is in excellent condition. There are no significant losses with any losses largely being restricted to fritting to the edges of the silver overlay. There is a minor repair to one side of the tip of the wooden scabbard. The piece has a wonderful patina, particularly the ivory hilt which has a warm, golden hue. Overall, it is a very fine example.

Texturing and sculpting in Zbrush went brilliantly, however, I got sabotaged by my own poor UV mapping, therefore the model imported very poorly in UDK. I may fix this in time, but, considering there are two hours left for the competition submission, it’s pretty much done.
